Batumi, Irakli Abashidze Street N2 / Konstantine Gamsakhurdia Street N20
Brief Description of the Building:
At the beginning of the 20th century, a stone house owned by Vitushinsky was built at the corner of Irakli Abashidze and Konstantine Gamsakhurdia Streets. Originally, the ground floor housed a pharmacy, and the second floor was occupied by the “Petersburgskaya” Hotel, a well-equipped accommodation at the time managed by Athanas Tavdishvili, where guests could enjoy French and Russian cuisine.
After the hotel was nationalized, the second floor was handed over to local residents, and the ground floor stalls were turned into shops.
The corner residential building, constructed in 1903, extends with long façades along both streets and encloses a rectangular courtyard with additional flanks. The corner section slightly protrudes as a risalit and is slightly elevated, distinguishing it from the rest of the structure.
The stylized Classicist façade is entirely covered in imitated rustication, painted in straw yellow with wine-red accents, creating the visual impression of a stone-built structure.
There are multiple entrances:
The house has a rectangular layout with a large atrium-type courtyard. Originally, glazed balconies faced the courtyard, but these have mostly been altered or enclosed. Only a few glazed sections remain. A later-added mansard floor is also preserved.
