Building at Akaki Tsereteli Street, N1, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This two-story building, constructed at the beginning of the 20th century, has an L-shaped plan. It turns sharply from Tbilisi Square onto Tsereteli Street. The building’s facades are plastered, and its decoration is restrained and simple. The first floor is commercially utilized and features wide, rectangular vitrines that divide the facade.
On the second floor, rectangular openings are rhythmically arranged between flat pilasters, each surrounded by profiled architraves. Along the sides of the window openings, smooth rectangular panels are placed. The entrance to the inner yard is through an archway on Tbilisi Square. On the second floor, there are various-sized metal decorative balconies with ornate railings – three of which are completed with side shade elements.
The building is noteworthy from an urban planning perspective. On one hand, it shapes the corner of Tbilisi Square, while on the other, it marks the beginning of Tsereteli Street. The design of the plan and facade suggests that the building was originally intended to serve as a hotel. The decorative features on the facades show clear influences from the Classical style.
