Batumi, Seaside Park Area – Colonnade
Brief Description of the Monument:
Located in the central part of the Seaside Park, along the main alley leading from the city toward the sea, the Colonnade was constructed in 1934 and serves as a ceremonial entrance to the beach. It consists of two identical wings symmetrically arranged on either side of the passage.
Each wing is shaped like an expanded letter “U” in plan and includes 12 smooth, unfluted columns topped with tall Corinthian capitals. The columns are connected by a classically designed entablature. Both the columns and entablature are plastered and painted in bright white.
The colonnade stands on a raised platform enclosed by a balustrade. Four steps from either side of the passage lead up to the platform. At the corners of the structure stand smaller columns with light fixtures. The platform is paved with artificial mosaic tiles in whitish-gray and wine-red colors, with an inscription indicating the construction date embedded among them.
The Colonnade is a characteristic example of Stalinist Classicism in landscape and park architecture.
