Building at Giorgi Mazniashvili Street N6 - Memed Abashidze Street N15, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This two-story maisonette house, likely built at the end of the 19th century, is located at the intersection of two streets. According to the 1890 assessment list, the building was already constructed by that time. The house was originally home to the International Credit Society, led by the wealthy and influential merchant, Shpolianski. The society, founded by prominent businessmen Grigol Volski and Sergey Meskhi, played a significant role in the city s development.
The building s design and location make it a notable architectural example. The house is situated at the corner of two streets, with symmetrical facades facing Giorgi Mazniashvili Street and Memed Abashidze Street. The structure is two stories high, with a wooden mezzanine at the center, protruding towards the street and covered with a fronton-like roof. The slanted edges of the frontons are supported by profiled wooden corbels.
The first floor of the house is divided by large glazed openings, separated by small wall sections adorned with pilasters. The surfaces of the pilasters are raised in a rectangular shape. The doorway leading from Mazniashvili Street features a metal decorative frame. Noteworthy is the ornamentation above the window and door openings on the second floor. Above the openings are carved decorative elements, primarily consisting of similar details: birds depicted between plant motifs. However, some of the window elements on Memed Abashidze Street are different. Here, each side of the window displays a snake motif, with plant ornaments placed at the ends.
The house is significant not only for its location at a key intersection but also for its volume and proportions, which help define the scale of the streets urban development. The building stands out for its interesting decorative elements and is an exceptional example of a maisonette house in Batumi.
