Batumi, Noe Zhordania Street No. 5 / Kutaisi Street No. 9
Brief description of the monument:
This building dates back to the end of the 19th century and represents a typical example of mixed-use commercial-residential architecture of its period. Its ground floor originally housed a dishware shop and a wholesale trading house, while the second floor accommodated the Hotel (Europa. ) Notably, the renowned Georgian writer Alexander Kazbegi resided in this hotel from 1883 to 1886.
The two-story corner structure has plastered façades. The floors are visually separated by a profiled cornice, though it is less visible today due to a balcony added later, extending along the entire façade. The ground-floor façade is segmented by rusticated pilasters, with rectangular window and door openings in between.
The second floor is artistically richer, rhythmically structured by fluted pilasters dividing the window openings. These windows alternate stylistically—some are topped by horizontal cornices, others by arched pediments. Below the profiled cornice runs a meander frieze. The building concludes with a parapet featuring decorative metal railings.
Executed in the Classical style, this building s proportions and overall volume integrate harmoniously into the urban fabric. Positioned at the intersection of two streets, it serves as a key architectural focal point in the streetscape.
