Batumi, Vakhtang Gorgasali Street N24
Brief Description of the Building:
This two-story, L-shaped house was built in the early 20th century and faces the street with its main façade. The plastered surface, painted in a grayish-white tone, features an eclectic architectural design.
On the left edge of the façade, a slightly projecting risalit houses the entrance hall on the ground floor and is accentuated by a metal balcony on the second floor. The passageway to the courtyard is located on the right side of the façade, above which is a second balcony. The rectangular window openings are framed with profiled surrounds and marked above by keystones decorated with floral ornaments. A continuous band of windows on the façade is emphasized below the sills with rectangular plaster elements.
Alongside details borrowed from eclectic Renaissance architecture, the building also features Art Nouveau decoration—three vertical strips descending below the capitals, adorning the pilasters at the corners of the risalit.
The entrance door is wooden and ornamented, leading into a vestibule adorned with sculptural plaster decorations. Interior features also include cast-iron stoves. On the courtyard side, the house has a glass-enclosed veranda, with a staircase leading down to the basement from that side as well.
This building is one of Batumi’s most outstanding houses in terms of its preserved original layout, facade, and interior decorative elements. It plays an important role in defining the scale and architectural character of the street.
