Batumi, 18 Konstantine Gamsakhurdia Street
Brief Description of the Building:
This two-story building was constructed at the end of the 19th century and is integrated into the perimeter development of the street. The structure features a balanced Classical-style façade, with pilasters flanking the side sections. On the left side, there is a vaulted passageway leading to the courtyard, fitted with a wrought iron gate. On the right side, the entrance hall is accessed through a richly carved double wooden door (a later alteration to the ground floor entrance is also present). Both upper corners of the façade have cantilevered balconies with wrought iron railings on the second floor.
Between these, the main façade plane is punctuated by six rectangular windows, framed on the sides and topped with decorative corniced lintels resting on brackets. The ground floor, originally designed for commercial use, features wide openings separated by rusticated pilasters. Currently, a literary café occupies the ground level.
The stories are separated by a profiled string course, and the building is crowned by a parapet with complex geometric shapes and a prominent cornice. The entrance hall and staircase are modest in design, featuring cast-iron steps and a metal balustrade. A wooden spiral staircase leads to the attic.
The house has an L-shaped layout and includes an inner courtyard. The courtyard façade originally featured glazed galleries, now mostly altered with various additions and enclosures. A section of the glazed balcony remains on a short stretch of the second floor. The attic level with a mezzanine has also been preserved.
The building harmoniously integrates with the urban fabric of the street and contributes to the area s architectural character.
