Building at Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street N7 / Shota Rustaveli Street N17, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This one-story building, designed in the (belletrage ) style, holds significant historical value. Between 1888 and the 1900s, Russian writers Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky stayed in this house during their visits to Batumi. According to local legend, the inspiration for the characters in Chekhov s famous play (Three Sisters ) came from the women of the Andreyev family, who lived nearby. The house also served as the residence of Luka Asatiani, the city mayor, who is associated with Batumi s urban development and infrastructure between 1895 and 1901.
The building is made of brick and features a basement with a stone-clad plinth where small basement windows are visible. The façade is simple and unadorned, with the only decorations being the window sills and frames, which are painted white. Below the rectangular window openings, a rectangular area is incorporated in the brickwork. The building is topped with a simple brick cornice and has a blank parapet that runs along the entire perimeter.
An additional floor was added on the side facing Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street using (Georgian brick ) construction materials. This extension has a sloped roof hidden in the ceiling, making the building appear one-story on this side. The added floor features two metal balconies.
The building is distinguished by its refined proportions, simple classical decoration, and moderate decorative elements that enhance its elegant form.
