Building at Baku Street N10 / Vladimir Kandelaqi Street N2, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This three-story building, constructed at the turn of the 20th century, has a Latin "U"-shaped plan. It is located at the intersection of I. Gogebashvili and V. Kandelaqi streets. Both facades facing the streets are divided by rectangular windows arranged in a consistent rhythm. The first floor features rough-hewn stone walls, with rusticated surfaces, divided by large windows, and is commercially used. The rest of the building is plastered and painted.
On the second and third floors, at the corner of the building and along the sides of the streets, pilasters made of smooth rusticated stone run along the facades. The windows on these floors are framed with a profiled surround, and the lower parts of the window frames are emphasized with slanted sills. A profiled belt separates the floors. On the side facing I. Gogebashvili Street, the second and third floors are adorned with metal, ornate, hanging balconies. On the V. Kandelaqi Street facade, a pair of two-story balconies, in an M-shape, are located on the left side. Beneath the balconies, slightly to the right, there is a two-story, metal, ornate staircase that leads to the entrance.
Both facades are crowned with a heavily projecting cornice, followed by a parapet with a smooth stone surface. On the rear side, the building has lost its original appearance. The third floor was added a few years ago, and extensions were made on the side facing the yard. Despite these changes, the original form of the building can still be perceived.
This building, while not outstanding in artistic merit, plays an important and notable role in the urban development of the street and the neighborhood.
