Batumi, Tengiz Makatsaria Street N5
Brief Description of the Monument:
This two-story building, constructed in the first half of the 20th century, has an elongated rectangular floor plan. It is built of stone and covered with a hipped roof. The building, raised on a plinth, features identically designed short façades: the tall plinth is pierced with rectangular windows, while the upper two floors are segmented with arched windows. Plain stringcourses divide the floors, and the corners of the façades are accentuated with vertical rows of rustication.
The long façades follow the same design principles: at both ends are solid (blind) wall sections, highlighted with horizontal bands and rusticated corners, echoing the short façades. Between these ends, recessed sections of the façade feature long balconies with metal railings, connected by interior staircases. The plinth zone of the long façades includes arched openings.
On the right side, a low, arched tunnel runs through the building, topped on both sides with decorative keystones. Two unsightly additions have been attached to the stone façades, and the balconies on the long façades have been heavily altered—most are either built in or enclosed with glass.
The façades of this building are inspired by Classical style and local architectural tradition, making it a notable example of Soviet-era architecture. It plays an important role in shaping the urban character of this specific street and neighborhood.
