Batumi, Vazha-Pshavela Street N3 / Shota Rustaveli Street N24
Brief Description:
Located on the territory of the old Batumi hospital, the chapel consists of two buildings connected by an arched gallery. The small hall church dedicated to St. Barbara is situated on the street side.
The rectangular-shaped building has an eastern half-rounded projecting apse, while the western side features a gateway. The building, constructed at the turn of the 19th-20th century, was restored in 1996.
The original structure was simple, plastered, and painted white. Above the gateway, in the area of the church s fronton, a bell tower with arches on all four sides was incorporated. The facades featured rectangular frames with arched niches inset into the wall, at the ends of the long facades. The decor of the facades was characterized by a profiled cornice at the bottom and two-step teeth above the triangular niches.
In 2014, the chapel underwent a complete restoration, receiving a stone covering with typical Georgian architectural ornaments, painted in a warm yellow color. The walls were decorated with false arches made of stone carvings, and the windows were adorned with vegetal ornaments. Above the central window of the apse, a decorative cross was added.
The reconstruction also changed the chapel’s configuration, enhancing its historic and architectural value.
