Batumi, Merab Kostava Street No. 20
Brief description of the monument:
This two-story Art Nouveau-style building was specifically constructed in 1908 as a shop for the Georgian entrepreneur Nikoloz Sabaev (Sabashvili). Its plastered and gray-painted façade, facing the street, is divided by two gently projecting risalits, each highlighted by tall, curved parapets. The main façade features broad arched openings on the ground floor and rectangular openings on the upper level. Entrances and stairways are arranged within these risalits.
The façade is crowned by a robust cornice resting on decorative brackets. Several years ago, reconstruction somewhat altered the building s authenticity. Circular and curved openings, a broken-profile cornice, an interrupted wavy parapet, and balconies supported by interior columns with ornamental metal railings exemplify the Art Nouveau style, marking it as a notable example of early 20th-century European artistic design.
This massive building, harmoniously integrated into its dense urban context, is among the finest Art Nouveau structures in Batumi and significantly influences the historical architectural character of Merab Kostava Street.
