Batumi University Administrative Building (Egnate Ninoshvili Street N35)
Brief Description:
The administrative building of Batumi University was constructed in the early 20th century. Until the 2000s, the building housed the university s library and archive. It is a large two-story building, entirely rendered on the exterior, except for the basement, which was finished with gray basalt slabs in the 1980s. The architecture of the building is minimalist and monumental, with almost no decorative elements.
The main façade faces Egnate Ninoshvili Street, with the risalit (projecting section) clearly visible on the left side of the center. The risalit is opened by deep loggias on both floors, and the first floor loggia is framed as a portico, with a seven-step stone staircase leading up to it. In front of the loggias, two columns are placed in the middle, with pilasters at the edges. These elements are two-story high and are capped with Ionic capitals. The risalit is crowned with a pediment.
The main façade is notably asymmetric, with the section on the right being approximately twice as long as the one on the left. On either side of the risalit, the façade is rendered with rustic imitations. The second-floor windows are semi-circular arched, while the first-floor windows are rectangular. The building is topped with a profiled cornice and a parapet.
On the side and rear façades, the same window forms are repeated: arched windows on the second floor and rectangular windows on the first floor. The second-floor side facing the courtyard features balconies.
This building is a rare and exceptionally well-executed example of neo-classical architecture in Batumi.
