Building at Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street N32 / Vakhtang Gorgasal Street N47 / Luka Asatiani Street N37, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This large, two-story building, crowned with a mansard roof, was constructed in the late 1930s. In the 1940s and 1950s, it housed a malaria station, followed by the Tropical Diseases Institute, and from 1951, the City Hospital No. 1. After undergoing renovations from 2010 to 2012, it became the home of the Batumi State Art University in 2012.
The building occupies the entire block and is set back from the streets. Its main facade faces Vakhtang Gorgasal Street, with the structure forming an elongated, semi-circular shape, centered on a strong risalit. A wide entrance is located within the risalit. Surrounding the building is a gallery at the first-floor level, supported by slender, well-proportioned canellure columns. The gallery is enclosed with a balustrade, and the main facade features a balcony above the gallery on the second floor, with a plastic balustrade decorated with plant motifs.
The second floor has rectangular windows framed by thin pilasters. The windows are topped with decorative lintels adorned with sculpted stone. The building culminates in a cornice, rhythmically segmented by decorative corbels. The building is crowned with a simple parapet, featuring alternating circular and rectangular flat surfaces.
The central risalit of the main facade is topped by a large, decorative balcony supported by massive corbels. The window above the entrance is wide, arched, and richly decorated with sculpted stone, flanked by plant ornamentation. Similar detailing is applied to the risalit, the upper corner windows, and the rear facade, with some minor variations. The rear facade features a similar design, with a reworked balustrade on the gallery and the second-floor veranda, and windows without sculpted stone details. The corner risalits contain entrance doors.
Executed in the neoclassical style, the building is notable for its non-standard composition, artistic design, and significant function. It plays a key role in the urban planning structure of the district and stands out for its scale and distinctive architectural character.
