Batumi, Vakhtang Gorgasali Street N13 / Khulo Street N12
Brief Description of the Building:
This corner house was built in 1905 and belonged to a person named Esoiani. The corner of the building is designed as a chamfered (beveled) façade. An unsightly later extension has been added on the side facing Khulo Street.
On the first floor, pilaster-like projections divide the façade, with large recessed sections housing rectangular door and window openings. The second floor is articulated with rusticated pilasters, and the openings have arched tops. These are framed with profiled surrounds, each featuring keystones at the center. The windows are topped with decorative pediments.
The building is crowned with a slightly projecting profiled cornice. On the Vakhtang Gorgasali Street side, there is a metal balcony with ornate railings on the second floor.
The house is characterized by restrained, modest decorative detailing. With its interesting layout and chamfered corner façade, the building plays an important role in the street’s architectural ensemble. The beveled corner design was thoughtfully employed to accommodate the narrow passage of Khulo Street.
