Address: Batumi, Yakob Gogebashvili Street / N18 - Saiatnova Street N1
Building Description
This Modernist-style building, constructed at the beginning of the 20th century, originally consisted of a two-story structure. However, several years ago, a third floor and a mansard were added. The main facade of the building faces Yakob Gogebashvili Street, while the side facades face Saiatnova Street, and both facades are divided into rectangular door-window openings.
The architectural division of the building is accentuated by pilasters that rise from the wall surface. These pilasters are adorned with elements typical of the Modernist style, with a relief of a lion s head placed on the upper parts of the pilasters. On the second floor, the facade is adorned with a vegetal ornamented frieze.
After the third floor and mansard were added, the building’s original design was modified, but the decorative elements (frieze, corbels) from the original building were preserved and precisely replicated on the new addition.
This house is significant in multiple ways. It is a notable example of Modernist-style architecture, and due to its scale and proportions (though now somewhat altered), it continues to play a dominant role in shaping the urban landscape on the seafront side.
