Building at Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street N1 / Egnate Ninoshvili Street N19, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This building, located at the intersection of two streets, was constructed in 1905. Initially, it was a single-story structure. The façade facing Egnate Ninoshvili Street has been plastered and features a rustic imitation decoration. The central part of the façade is slightly recessed. On the left side, a triple window is framed by narrow middle columns between the window openings, while on the right side, paired windows (one of which was later altered to create an entrance to a store). The tops of the rectangular window openings are accentuated with relief-like decorative stones.
The building s corner is rounded, and the entrance door is located on Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street. The arched entrance is flanked by broad, flat pilasters topped with low Doric capitals. Similarly, a two-step pilaster is placed between two windows on the right side of the central entrance. Matching corner pilasters also frame the entrance. The first floor is topped with a profiled cornice, with a parapet placed above it. On either side of the parapet, turret-like decorations with fronton-style caps can be seen above the entrance.
Later, in the 1930s, a second floor was added, which mirrors the division scheme of the first floor’s façade. The rounded corner is further accentuated at this level.
This building is a good example of a small, typical residential house from the early 20th century in Batumi. The additional floor was added in a way that seamlessly integrates with the overall scale of the street, enhancing the building s fit into the urban environment.
