Batumi, Vaja-Pshavela Street N45 / Stepane Zubalashvili Street N30
Brief Description of the Building:
The current building of the Batumi City Court was constructed between 1930 and 1935, based on a design by architect D. Svischevsky. It originally functioned as the “1st of May” Hotel. In 1944, the famous Georgian poet Galaktion Tabidze resided there.
Located at the intersection of two streets, this three-story hotel features a rounded corner façade that echoes the curve of the adjacent square, playing a key role in the spatial organization of the area. The plastered façades are divided by wide rectangular openings and are painted in a pinkish-sand tone. Decorative cast elements—roses and ivy—are highlighted in a chestnut hue.
Two large panels on the corner façade depict scenes of harvesting mandarin oranges and tea—agricultural products characteristic of the region. The parapet’s openwork railing is designed with a repeating motif of grape clusters.
Inside, the central marble staircase stands out. The building holds particular urban planning significance and is also notable for the articulation of its façades and decorative elements.
