Building at Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street N19 - Memed Abashidze Street N38, Batumi
Brief Description of the Building:
This building was specifically constructed in the 1930s as a press house, where the editorial offices of the newspapers (Achara) and (Adjaria) were located until 2007. Afterward, a bank took over the premises. The three-story, large-scale building stands at the corner of two streets, with its facades extending evenly along the streets.
Both facades are designed symmetrically. Slightly projecting, risalit-like sections are present at the edges and the central part of the facades. The rectangular openings are symmetrically arranged across all three floors. The surface of the walls below the windows on the first floor is smooth, while above, horizontal stripes are applied. The upper two floors are unified by (gigantic) pilasters, with a row of balusters beneath the windows on the second floor. The pilasters are topped with stylized volute capitals. Above these, the facades are framed by relief stripes, smooth surfaces, and a profiled cornice with a row of dentils, leading to a straight, low parapet.
The central part of the main facade (on Memed Abashidze Street) features a slight recess, housing the central entrance of the building. The upper two floors are unified, with the classical spirit of the construction period softened somewhat by the reconstruction and the original terrazzo finishing that provides an open, smooth surface. This building is one of the prominent architectural units on the street, contributing significantly to the area s architectural character.
