Batumi, 19 Khariton Akhvlediani Street / 41 Petre Melikishvili Street
Brief Description of the Monument:
This large, two-story corner building with a high basement covers an entire block, with facades facing three streets. It was specifically built for a girls gymnasium at the beginning of the 20th century, in 1904, based on Pomorski s design. The building’s main facade is oriented towards I. Jincharadze Street, where the sole entrance is located, adorned with a portico decorated with fluted columns set on tall stone bases. Above the portico is a spacious veranda enclosed by a railing with balusters.
The facades are primarily segmented by rectangular, broadly outlined openings arranged in three wings. The ground floor has rusticated surfaces with recessed rectangular panels beneath the windows. The second floor features more elaborate ornamentation with profiled window frames. Flat, fluted pilasters are evenly spaced across the facade, while window bases are accentuated by rectangular relief panels.
A prominent thin risalit marks the corner of the building’s main body, featuring a grand, unified arched window topped by a massive, ornate pediment. The floors are separated by a profiled cornice, and the building is crowned by a dentil cornice, above which there is an interrupted parapet. The construction date is inscribed on the main facade above the portico. This building represents an important early 20th-century structure, preserving architectural traditions characteristic of the city.
