Batumi, 19 Konstantine Gamsakhurdia Street / 34 Merab Kostava Street
Brief Description of the Building:
Located at the corner of Gamsakhurdia and Kostava streets, this two-story building likely dates back to the early 20th century. Its façades are characterized by Classical-Baroque stylization. On both façades, the ground floor features large rectangular and arched openings flanked by rusticated pilasters.
The second-floor façade is segmented by arched doorways that open onto balconies and rectangular window openings. The balconies are made of wrought iron with ornate railings. A parapet runs along the top of the building, composed of rectangular projections alternating with sections of decorative iron railing.
The main façade faces Merab Kostava Street. At its center is an arched entrance to the stair hall, framed by a profiled surround adorned with button-like decorative elements. The entrance door is made of wood. This central portion of the façade is accentuated by decorative plasterwork around the doorway, as well as by a semi-circular wrought iron balcony on the second floor (other balconies on the façade have angular outlines). Above the central entrance, the parapet is crowned with a small fronton.
Within the surface of the fronton is a plaster medallion surrounded by decorative floral tendrils, bearing the initials of the building’s original owner: “АМ.”
This building is of urban-planning significance. Positioned at the intersection of two streets, it holds an important architectural and visual role in defining the character and structure of the surrounding cityscape.
