Batumi, Vakhtang Gorgasali Street N41
Brief Description of the Building:
This residential house was built in 1884. Originally a one-story structure, a second floor was added in 1903. The building belonged to a Greek owner, M. Kongalidi. The first floor housed a café and retail counters. Since the Soviet period, the building has undergone several functional changes, having served as Music School No. 2 and later as the military commissariat. Today, it houses the R. Lagidze Music School.
The façades are articulated with rectangular door and window openings. Only the central second-floor window is arched, emphasizing the vertical axis of the façade. The first floor features rusticated pilasters. The central entrance is accentuated by a decorative wrought-iron awning.
On the second floor, the window openings are flanked by plain-surfaced pilasters. Two balconies with ornate metal railings project from the façade. The building is topped with a parapet, which features arched shapes on either side of the central axis.
This building is notable both for its historical significance and as an architectural example combining Classicist and Baroque styles. It fits well within the dense urban fabric of the street and is in full harmony with the scale and proportions of neighboring houses.
