The archaeological expedition was continued in the current year in order to determine the northern border of the building dated back to VI c. AD. As revealed, the mentioned building is quite large, thus its study could not have been finished this year. The wall of the Byzantine building was cut in two places by two catchment collectors mortared and processed with limestone, which were built in the Ottoman period. The said catchment collectors collected water from four channels of the drainage system and distributed it outside the fortress. The artefacts found in this territory of the fortress are mainly dated back to two periods: The early Middle Ages (VI c.) and the Ottoman period. We hope to complete determining the contours of the building of VI c. AD in the next year, accordingly we will be able to talk more precisely and substantially about the function of the building and the chronological interrelation of this and other buildings located in the central part of the fortress. The head of the expedition – Archaeologist Giorgi Tavamaishvili.
