The bronze sculptures of the Prince of Colchis, Son of King Aeetes – Absyrtus and Imperator of Rome were placed near the west gate of the Gonia-Apsaros Archaeological Architectural complex.
Some researchers deem that the name Apsaros is related to Absyrtus. In this respect, the information written by Arrian (II c. AD) is noteworthy: “It is believed that the place Apsaros was previously named as Absyrtus, because, according to the myth, Absyrtus was killed by the order of Media (they also show the burial of Absyrtus), and then this name was distorted by Barbarians”. The same information is repeated by the authors in VI c. AD - Procopius of Caesarea and Stephanus of Byzantium.
Particularly, the military, political, cultural and economic advancement period of Apsaros fortress and the town is related to Emperor Hadrian. The information by Procopius of Caesarea is significant: “This town had numerous population in old times, surrounded by many walls and had a theatre and hippodrome”. It is not excluded that this information reflects the construction activity of Hadrian in Apsaros.
The Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency of Adjara plans to place the sculptures of Pharasmanes the Valiant and Georgian (Colchian) warrior on the territory of the fortress.
The sculptors: David Mindorashvili and Eduard Shakhnazarovi.
