In 2022, archaeological works continued on the territory of Petra Fortress. (Head of the expedition - archaeologist Giorgi Tavamaishvili) As a result of the research carried out on the site of the early medieval three-naval basilica, the walls of the eastern section of the southern nave of the basilica were cleared, and new contours of the foundations of the early church on the three-nave basilica have outlined.
In the south-western area of the citadel, structures were excavated, which contain the remains of two construction periods: the early (pre-medieval) structure was a rectangular building with rounded corners, the walls, and floor of which were plastered with limestone, and it was probably a water reservoir.
In the late Middle Ages, a building made of flat stones was built on the west side of the mentioned building, the functional purpose of which should be determined by its economic character.
In connection with the mentioned building, there should be a branch of rainwater channel covered with flat stones, which continues to the west and the study of which will be completed next year.
With this year s excavations, it was established that in the early Middle Ages, on the site of the building made of flat stones, there was a building, which, based on the style of construction of the walls and the concave amphorae arranged along the wall, we can date it to VI century AD. The walls of the mentioned building continue in the north and west directions.
The study of the building is planned to be completed by next year. The results of this year s excavations give us a solid basis to say that 2023 will be the year of more interesting and important discoveries.
