Archaeological excavations are underway at the fort of Gvara with financing of Ajara Cultural Heritage Protection Agency. The expedition continued to work started at the last year and completed the study of the various architectural structures found in the interior of the fort. This expedition examined the tower in the southeastern wall of the fort. As it turned out, the fort’s gate located from this side earlier. The tower controlled the only way forward to the fort and took an important place in the defense system. In the internal space of the tower, 9 pitchers were found on the floor. In parallel to archaeological excavations, the most part of the walls that fell out of the fort were cut off. The control trenches pass through to utside the fort, to the west, north and south walls. The area adjacent to the fort was also cleaned. The fort of Gvara was the key stronghold to on the way to Nigal and Machakhela valleys. The road to Shavsheti and Klarjeti will pass through this fort as well. The main purpose of the fort was to control roads leading to the the rivers of Chorokhi and Machakhela. The fort played a major role at the unified defense system of the river of Chorokhi gorge since 11th to first half of 20th centuries.
