  • Archeological excavations in Gonio-Apsarus Fortress - 3 აგვისტო, 2020

    This year Gonio-Apsarus permenent archeological expedition carried out field works in two districts. Excavations at the first district revealed Ottoman and Roman water supply systems,sewage system of the Roman time and remains of the building foundation pile. Artefacts from the Roman and Ottoman periods are also presented in a large quantities.Pipes,glazed potteries,faiance ,sinop amphorae,pieces of different types of pots,pots and pans.It turns out that in this section of the Fortress was quite intense during the Roman period in the I II century.Especially the II -III -rd centuries were distinguished .Most of the identified artefacts and the foundations of the building belong to this period. The second district is located in the north-west site of the Fortress (NW XII). As a result of the expedition revealed artefacts of Roman ,Bizantine and Ottoman period.Most artefacts found in this district is dated II-III-rd century.Six bronze and two silver coins were found in parallel with fragments of amphorae ,glassware,pottery and tiles One of them depicts the Emperor Adrian on the observe and the goddess of victory Nike on the reserve with a laurel wreath in her hand.The three inscriptions found at the polling station are of great interest.One of which is a stamp on a brick and it must have belonged to a cohort standing in the castle.The second hand has Latin letters carved on it and third one must be the tombstone of a Roman soldier .It should be noted that similar artifacts is the first discovery in the territory Gonio Fortress.
