Georgian-Polish joint archaeological excavations were held outside the walls of Gonio-Apsaros fortress for the first time this year. As archaeologists supposed the very first Roman fortress had different shape and size. They found two lines of foundation of defensive walls which have different construction and date of build. The earliest wall could be a part of the first Roman garrison. The last excavations clearly show that the fortress was built in the period of Caesar Nero. After that period Romans have returned in the area several times and rebuilt not only defensive walls but also inside buildings.
Georgian-Polish joint expedition has been working in the fortress since 2014. The heads of the expedition are Prof. Shota Mamuladze (Director of Gonio-Apsaros Museum-reserve) and Prof. Radoslav Karasievich-Shchipiorski (University of Warsaw, Department of Archaeology). Up to this time the most important discovery of the joint expedition was a bathroom floor with mosaic.
