The Georgian-Polish international archaeological expedition is in progress in the territory of the Gonio-Apsaros Fortress. At this stage, the archaeological works are performed in the north-east part of the fortress.
The unique objects related to the cult of Jupiter are found. The cult of this god was widespread in the Roman army in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. A gold votive badge with a Greek inscription dedicated to this deity is of particular note. Another find is a bronze statuette depicting an eagle standing on a bull, which is a typical way of symbolically representing Jupiter.
An equally important and unique find is the remains of a Roman military sandal from which a whole set of iron nails has been preserved, with which the sole of the shoe was shod.
The archaeological works will be continued for three months.
The co-leader of the expedition is Radosław Karasiewicz-Szczypiorski.
The head of the expedition is Merab Khalvashi.
