  • Archaeological Excavations in Gvara Fortress - 13 ივნისი, 2018

    Gvara Fortress is located in Khelvachauri Municipality. Specialists have been working in the fortress for 2 weeks and have studied most parts of its inside territories. They found 18 Qvevri dating back to the 11th century. Archaeologists also excavated a tower which is a part of the fortress fence and found different types of stoneware in it. Local inhabitants intensively participate in the excavations. The date of building of the fortress will be known after finishing the excavations. According to the discovered materials the fortress functioned in X-XVIII centuries.

    Today the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of Ajara Inga Shamilishvili, the Deputy of the Minister Irakli Tavberidze, the Mayor of Khelvachauri Jumber Vardmanidze and the Head of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency of Ajara Mirza Tsetskhladze have visited the fortress.

    The excavations are financed by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency of Ajara and supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Ajara.
